Promissory Note 04/25/2014 03:06 AM CDT
I was doing some of my usual work, when it occurred to me that it would be kind of useful if you could make a promissory note. Basically, you'd go to a bank, pull out an amount of money, which would become a physical item. You could then write a name on it and only you or the named person could redeem it.

See, sometimes I need to pay someone, and get it to them by a third party. It would be nice if it was possible to ensure the third party couldn't just take it and wander off.

Lore wise, considering the first promissory notes started popping up in Europe around the 1600s, it wouldn't be out of line.

Then again, I'm posting while tired, so maybe this is ridiculous.

I think it's been discussed before, though it was more centered on 'checks (or cheques if you wish?)'.

I think there was a system limitation where the GMs said 'not really practical'.

What niche do you see this filling though? You already have to meet a person in person to exchange cash. I guess this would mean you could wolf/fam ship payments?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but that seems odd. Between mechanics such as deeds and money belts, you'd expect something like that wouldn't be too difficult. Then again, it's DR.

Well, the reason I would want them is so that I could write out a payment to Bob and hand it to Will to take to him, and be sure that Will isn't going to wander off with the coin.

It seems like it would be nice to have a method of making "I'm not going to be around, would you pay x for me?" a little less risky.

It also seems like if a system like this could be set up, it wouldn't be that difficult to tack on a voucher/coupon system (here's 100 plat toward anything at my shop/table or in person).

Just have a trader put it on their table and reserve it for the person. That works for 24 hours after that it will sell to anyone for the price listed on the item. Either way you get your money.

Hmm. Forgot that existed, thanks.

Regardless, it would require me to find a trader who's willing to do that, and would only be useful if the shop happened to be open at the right time.

AND the player who will be buying the item has to be in game when the trader reserves it, otherwise you can't reserve it.

if memory serves i believe this is something that you used to be able to do (and maybe still can) in Gemstone so i imagine it is not impossible to port over but i'm in no way an authority on the subject.

Promissory notes are a big component of the cash system over in GS4. Its not implemented here for a variety of reasons I'm sure a GameMaster can jump in on. I -believe- its technically feasible, just not implemented for lore/game mechanic reasons.
