Look where they're falling, not all that hard to figure it out. I can have my cleric waiting if you want? You'll just need a moon mage, or I can get something for you, for a fee.

>>Ok, one remaining question: hunting those thugs. Do many actually hunt them, given the dangers?
As Tiesse mentioned, it's quite feasable to hunt the alley Thugs. The danger of falling through the floor is only 1 or two specific rooms(possbily moving between those two, been a while), that leaves roughly 12 other rooms to hunt in.
It's not a terribly common hunting grounds, but that's mainly because many folks find Throne City to be an awkward town to stay in. You're close enough to hear some gweth chatter from Haven and by Vipers on the NTR, but you've got a roughly 20 minute barge ride to get back to Haven if you want to do more than just talk.

I just thought I'd give thugs a try to train up stealths/backstabbing. I currently hunt peccs and swampies in Lang now so unless the data on thugs is a bit off, I'm thinking I should be able to handle them easy. I feel like I'm at a point that it's hard to train stealths. Krahei hatchlings don't push'm much anymore. Snow goblins are extremely hard to train with, they always search and find me. Swampies and peccs are a bit too hard to hide from it seems.

Throne city thugs are great for boxes and harvesting the powder they use. Not so great for defensive training.

<<The floor is definitely not totally random. Neither my thief nor my moon mage are prone to falling thorough it. However, they're both fairly well trained. I fell twice when I originally went with my moon mage at around 40th circle, although I didn't die. But now I can roam around there hunting and running laps up to Fade and back and not worry about falling. Maybe agi/ref or int/wis and a disarm or climbing check? What's the messaging when you fall?
I am actually starting to think there is not really a skill check since Lamafoofoo fell twice through it yesterday and so did Zihnj. So either its an impossible contest or something is not working right.

It got Zihnj too? Weird. He has high ref/agi as well as climbing and escaping.

Weight? Although race shouldn't have anything to do with that.

Lamafoofoo has 99 agil/reflex also but no clue on his climbing/escaping.
But ya it got Zihnj and he insta died. Be interesting if it is a race thing, What are lama and zihnj? human?

Well, you can't use burden because that would vary based on stats. (Assuming the floor is literally giving out due to weight.) A naked gnome is going to weigh less than a naked tog, there's no argument there. But, character inventory would realistically be a huge factor.
The real way to do this would be to calculate the total weight of the character plus the weight of all the character's possessions. But I'm guessing that a more simple calculation is being used. Because Copernicus has burden with 99 str/stam and a capped EASE, meaning he's carrying like 6000+ stones minimum and he doesn't fall as often as you guys are saying.
And yes, Lamarque and Zihnj are both human. Gnome FTW.

My burden was None when I fell through, though I suppose that doesn't mean my thief isn't heavy.
She also has 259 ranks of escaping. :/

While that's a decent theory, I'm pretty sure that isn't the case. If people would post their race and their success or failure rate, I bet we could draw a correlation.

It is based off of travel speed, sneaking through the room might help also but i havent tested that out.

Sneaking/dragging actually helps because it often bypasses custom mechanics entirely. If you go back in time far enough, you could swim through any room with 0 ranks in swimming if you dragged an item. Over time, these hacks get fixed.
Btw, if the sneaking-past-ice thing gets fixed without updating the mechanic to be skill/stat based, I promise to nerd-rage.

I thought I posted this earlier but something must have happened. When I first discovered Throne City, I died to the falling wall a few times, either while exploring thugs or traveling back from a trip to Fade. Then someone suggested I sneak through the area, and have yet to die let alone see the mechanic since. It does lend some credence to the go slow hypothesis.

Or the fact that there's no core "movement" mechanic. Thus, if a room has a custom obstacle it needs to trap for every type of possible movement. And if a new movement type gets added, it is pretty much guaranteed to bypass any old obstacle mechanic such as mud or webbing. (Off-topic, but I believe that the first instance of an ice-like timed movement mechanic was the greater fist area.)
This is why rather than implement a black list of verbs a white list is often used instead. That way, you've got a mechanic you can't bypass, but it adds illogical restrictions. Which is why you can't use chatter on the Aesry stairs, and why you can't check exp (or other OOC verbs) while you use the flee verb.
Awhile back I suggested that verbs be put on a unified classification system depending on if they required movement or not, were ooc or not, etc. But I was told that I didn't know what I was talking about. Good times.

I hate to be a necromancer outside of the game, too, but I thought this deserved some discussion.
Some people get that same enjoyment you do out of discovery and don't want the answers beforehand. Others are terribly upset when anything goes wrong in their game experience, especially if they weren't expecting it.
I think the best you can do as a game designer is to create avenues toward as many kinds of fun as you can. There's no wrong way to play DR (unless you're doing something to get locked out, and even then that's usually pretty fun).
