I apologize for any inconvenience the downtime of Elanthipedia has caused anyone.

The problem with the host is that the scripts that run the site have grown too taxing (in terms of cpu usage) on the sharing hosting that I have for the site. In order to continue as it is, I will have to upgrade to a vps which is well beyond my budget for web hosting, so I cannot personally bankroll the upgrade. The amount is such that it would take significant donations per month to maintain the site with my current host. I have received a handful of donations over the years for the site, and that is very much appreciated!

I'm working with Simu on a solution but in the meantime, I will think of how best to present a donation scheme to upgrade and get the site up as soon as possible. The first month would be ~$75 with a discount from the host for upgrade then around $100 rounding up after that.

I'm in the process of moving (which is why the site has been down so long - SORRY!) but I will try to check back on the forums when I can. In the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions about how to go about this the most fair way possible, you can email me at webmaster@elanthipedia.com.

Could an optional "donate to elanthipedia" option be added to simu's billing page? Users could put in an amount that would get billed to our Simu accounts, and that money could be put into a fund somewhere. Maybe when enough for, say, 6 months of hosting gets collected the "drive" ends, to be restarted (with notification on facebook, twitter, etc.) when there is under two months worth of funds left. That way there's never a huge pile of donated money being sat on, but the pool can be refreshed every so often.

From the pricing posted, it seems like if everyone that uses elanthipedia just chipped in a buck or two, you'd have more than enough to get up and running.

However, I have no idea what the programming/banking end of that suggestion would work, so it might not be feasible. That would just be the most user-friendly way for me to chip in.

I work for a VPS company and that price seems way way over the top for what it should cost. That's more the price for your own dedicated, not a VPS itself. If your other options don't pan out, feel free to email me and I'm sure I can get you a VPS with the resources you need for much less if not free.

PS I still think the idea to have a donation through our simu accounts would be a good idea and whoever is doing the hosting whatever should still look into that, I think if it was easy to add a dollar or whatever to our account every couple months people would do it.
