Basic mining questions 03/14/2013 11:03 AM CDT
Does this message mean that the area is tapped out? I've got 350+ app, 300 perc, and 200 outdoorsmanship

>prospect
You see evidence of mineral deposits and are certain a scattering of resources remains to be found.
This area is composed of metamorphic rock layers.
Roundtime: 10 sec.

after I prospect careful, I see this:

R>prospect
You see evidence of mineral deposits and are certain a small quantity remains to be found.
This area is composed of metamorphic rock layers.
Studying the geology, you are certain that continued mining will be quite safe.
You are certain that schist can be mined here.
You are certain that copper can be mined here.
A diagram on the wall shows the location of additional resources still available for mining.
Miners stand ready to trade resources in for deeds. Just PUSH any mined up stone or metal, and they'll take care of the rest.
Roundtime: 8 sec.

When the prospect messaging goes back to the first, am I done in that room?

mining while in combat, does it change chance to find stuff? I run a cyclic to kill the mobs that spawn instead of stopping to fight them. Should I be killing them off instead of mining? They can't hurt me.

Thanks!

Yes.

>> When the prospect messaging goes back to the first, am I done in that room?

Yes. For this reason, most people save prospect careful for when they clear out the room the first time or if they accidentally trigger a danger. Please don't use prospect careful on every room you go through, it will drive some folks to violence :)

>>mining while in combat, does it change chance to find stuff?

Not as far as I know. I do the same.

Thanks for the quick response!

Just thought up another question, this is in regards to tools. Does the quality of the tool affect drop rate? Kind of like how masterfully crafted tools make it easier to masterfully craft items. Or is it just about speed?

I don't think tools effect mining drop rate, but I could be wrong. Speed is important because you can clear faster. The closer an area is to being depleted, the more likely you are to find rare stuff. You may want to glance over these previous GM posts if you haven't:

How often should I be prospecting once I'm mining? I've been doing prospect danger every two swings to keep myself safe, but how often should I do a regular prospect to know if there's stuff left in the room?

I do a prospect after 5 swings with no drop. Seems a good compromise between not wanting to mine an empty room and not wanting to waste time on frequent prospects.

ah, that's a good idea. Thanks. I've been going by the rule of thumb where if the last thing I left on the ground disappears then it's time to check.

I check every 10 swings until I reach scattered amounts, then switch to every 5 swings

man if I only prospect danger every 10 swings (even 5) I doubt I would get through a single room with out triggering something.

Pretty sure they are talking about just using prospect, not prospect danger.

The question was about regular prospect, not prospect danger.

That said, I only prospect danger after a danger message*, and even though I use speed tools, I hardly ever set off disasters.

*Unless I've found a very rare vein, in which case I prospect danger after every swing.

Oh gotcha, reading comp! - towards the question if you pay attention and track the messaging you can actually tell by the message if it's empty. So I hardly ever prospect until it's empty.

Now this I find interesting... Something to try to figure out!
