Hello,
So, I've done work orders for a while and I've decided that I like Forging as a profession. I think that I will focus on Weaponsmithing. Any suggestions as to my initial Technique choices?

Personally, I like the speed and purity ones. Then the tempering ones and balancing one. After that, you just pick what kinds of weapons you want to start off making.

As someone who hasn't played much with forging, can you explain why?

They help with all forging tasks and allow you to produce complete products. E.g. Tempering, honing, and balance techs are required in order to do those tasks. The weapon specific ones are simply a skill substitute and only help with specific small sets of weapons and don't actually allow you to create a completely finished weapon. Another way to think of it is asking which techniques would you learn if you had to choose between learning only weapon specific feats or only the utility feats. The utility ones would win out, because they can't be duplicated by skill alone.

If you have crappy quality metal, the metal quality tech helps you work around that (this can be used often times to avoid purifying your metal and losing volumes).
If you have crappy shop tools, the tool quality tech helps you work around that.
If you have the speed tech, you can forge like 20% faster. Both the above techs unlock that tech.
Most weapons that people want actually require lower end skill and no techs. The swappables require a lot more skill if you have no techs. For instance, a bastard sword is like 1100 ranks with no techs to cap with perfect everything.
So, strategically, one could frontload techs into stuff like quality and speed, along with specialty touches like tempering and balancing. Even if you make some smaller weapons, you can fully enhance them with those techs and be competitive in the market/whatever. As you gain ranks, you can start bulking up specific weaponsmithing techniques that help you make more difficult weapons easier.
I know 500 ranks may sound like a lot at times, but compared to the last 1250 ranks, it's a breeze. You can do a lot with 500 ranks and only a small amount of techniquess. Also, techniques are frontloaded, so you get more early on anyway, and even more with a career/hobby.
