Anyone know whether the yarn type you use when knitting affects skill gain?

It appears there is no, or much smaller difference, in difficulty of spinning the different types of yarn, relative to spinning threads (i.e., I can get masterfully-crafted yarn of types I can't get of same type threads). But so far I can't really tell if it affects knitting.
