So the minimum research time is 4 minutes, which is achieved when the target skill is at least 400 ranks below appraisal. Using it on a skill that's 400 ranks above appraisal, I get 12 minutes of research time (and approximately 50% less experience). Has anyone gotten a larger research time?

Just want to add my thank you also. I locked this skill for the first time in a long time.

Any spell casting will break it, and cyclics are a subset of that so every time it pulses (i.e. casts) it will break it. And not just for Bards. Also, it uses the exact same mechanism that RESEARCH does, so if there's anything different than that it should be reported, but everything in your post appears working as intended from what I can tell.

Okay, I just tested and I'm able to maintain a cyclic spell (tested both SoV and SLS) both during a RESEARCH and an APPRAISE FOCUS session. What you might want to do Linett is take a look at this list of things that work/don't work in conjunction with RESEARCH and see what else is not working the same way for you for either APP FOCUS or RESEARCH, and then post a list in the LORE bug folder. https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Magical_Research#Other_Actions_During_Research

Maybe try other cyclics, too. It might just be something specific to Faenella's Grace because of the way the spell works or something. Things like knowing GROUP CASTING or TEAM PLAYER or AREA CASTING might make a difference too. (I know none of these, personally.)

Any chance of having SWIM removed from the list of what interrupts appraise focus/research?

I can enter cardinal directions to swim through rooms but actually using SWIM <direction> isn't possible.

Ah, it's the area affect from your own spell doing it. Probably won't happen with cyclics that don't affect yourself, or that affect yourself without accessing the AOE mechanics. I need to add some other stuff into the research mode code anyways, I might poke at getting things to act more consistent with cyclics as well while I'm in there.

Based on the second half of your statement I'm pretty sure you're aware of this, but you would use APP FOCUS KNIFE. I.e. The focus is being done on the item, not the skill.

That said, it no longer appears to be working correctly or the person who filled out that entry on elanthipedia just took a guess and didn't verify. It was one of the first listed, so I'm going to assume that it actually worked and guess taht something about the fix that was made to ranged weapons in the left hand teaching brawling broke it.
