I'm in favor of letting paladins have this one for the sake of enjoying the game. Rigid preconceived RP molds aren't any fun anyway.

That may be an argument against the first strike penalty existing at all, but as long as it exists, this is clearly a first strike. The fact that the mob is paying you to off them doesn't change that.

Now, what would make sense would be the first strike penalty not applying when the paladin is the target. Then they're no longer the initiator; they're defending themselves from a payed assassin.

No, for the same reasons we're not turning off a Ranger being negatively impacted while hunting someone down if they're not in the wilds, nor are we turning off a Thief's negative effects for hunting down anyone outside of an urban area, nor are we turning off an Empath's Shock for attacking/killing their target (themselves), nor are we turning off a Barbarian's aversion to using a fireball wand to kill their target.

These are the preconceived molds you signed up for when you joined your Guild. They don't just get set aside when it's more convenient. They aren't set aside for RP Events, so they're not being set aside for this.

Dark Paladins as we support are self-sacrifical, not Evil. A Dark Paladin is exactly the sort of person who would go kill for necessity and take the soul hit, because by taking the soul hit he reaffirms his own moral center. Where the more "archetypal" Paladin might get caught up in the ethics and spiritual purity issues and stay his hand.

If you want Evil Paladin, you have the option too; take the soul hit and rage about the injustice of it all.

I see empaths more on the victim end instead of causing harm but still being able to rack up their score by successfully defending themselves with GS.

Only thing I am wondering about is why this isn't live right now.

Why the registration phase?

re: Assassins! 07/23/2010 02:49 PM CDT
To get enough valid targets to start the game. If you have a list of 10 people, easy to figure out whose after you.

If you have a list of 60, not so much.

Likely all the mechanics aren't in place yet but they wanted to give everyone a chance to sign up while they finish things up so once it's all ready to go they can just start.

This is the reason for the registration phase. Also, if everybody that starts playing can't find a target, they're likely to get bored and quit. Registration makes the game immediately fun (once it starts).

Speaking of which, I just turned it on again. Happy hunting :)

Not at the moment. There's unfortunately no easy way to do them all at once. For now, the only pets that can get Assassins kills are GSes.

Is there any leniency on deaths from assassination, IE exp lost on death?

When someone got me earlier I departed with all my field experience intact. Also my weapon didn't drop. I used depart item, but if the weapon stuck, maybe you could just depart and keep all items, I haven't tried that.

Is it intended to be able to change new targets at will? I accidentally changed my target, then requested a new one, and a new one, and a new one... five different targets and then it started saying nobody in range

Shouldnt there be a timer on choosing a new target so you dont just cycle through people til you find someone you know/hate/know their location? I was really looking forward to my original target who was logged out, but nonetheless didnt mean to change it

Note sure if this is intended or not...

But I can essentially cycle through "assassin request" for new targets without attempting to even hunt down my current.

Intended? No. Hilarious? Absolutely.

>>Is there any leniency on deaths from assassination, IE exp lost on death?

Nope

>>Also, where do you go to get paid?

I'll give a few hints so people can go searching. You're looking for an alcoholic in Crossing, to ask about 'bounty'. I'll be adding more places to retrieve your bounties as time goes on, but for now Crossing's got the only one.

Your bounties won't ever decay, so you don't have to worry about claiming them immediately.

Is there going to be any sort of event to introduce the story that makes it all IC? Or will the NPCs talk about it?

My character is strictly not a mercenary and as such will not be involved, but looks like a nifty release from a mechanics standpoint.

This probably shouldn't be allowed in general - seems silly if you can pick out your target. However, I would like to be able to make a new assassin request if my target is not online. I don't want to be stuck on a target or in arbitrary downtime just because people are in the assassins game but logged off.

I departed after mine and exp was clear.

My fight was all too funny. Selyf and I were each others targets and neither one of us could hurt the other. Finally I slept him, but avenger still barely scratched him. Its nice how evenly matched we were! Kudos to the GMs on this! These can turn into EPIC battles if others are as closely matched as we were and don't just give up on their targets.
