I remember some messaging toggles being mentioned a long time ago, like telling the game you don't want to see opponents/self/PCs missing/hitting. Is this still on the table, or will I have to continue using ignores for this? I really only care if I get hit or if I miss...

Not on the table for this. Though, you should look into the SET COMBATBRIEF and COMBAT toggles if you haven't already.

Not sure what COMBAT is, but with COMBATBRIEF and BATTLEBRIEF set I still see complete misses. There's a lot of messaging for complete misses. Dodge/block/parry all have multiple completely defended messages.

Did not know about that. Good to know, but I don't hunt in groups very often. Does this turn off others getting hit? That's about the only thing I would care about, especially if they're in my group.

You'll see the damage sentences in monster bold when they take damage enough to injure or drop vitality. It will ignore the dodges, parries and blocks of other players.
