A rough wooden stick is a quarter staff pole-ranged weapon.
A rough wooden stick trains the stave skill.

Quarter staff pole-ranged weapons don't give a + Stave boost

A short staff melee-ranged does give a + Staves boost though

A long wrench is a short staff melee-ranged weapon.
A long wrench trains the stave skill.

The following skills are currently under the influence of a modifier:

+ Staves
+ Brawling

Also, if you cast COTC with both hands empty, it seems to default to + Brawling + Small Edge
