I'm not trolling, but why does this matter?

I'm under no illusion about people who set open being 'better' RPs than people who set closed or moderate or waffle.

And I set all my chars to open.

Bro, it has nothing to do with closed vs open vs guarded. It was simply information.

Relax.

This would put you in the minority of self-crowned "good" roleplayers.

I'm not suggesting there is or is not a correlation between being set open and being a good rp'er, but there is definitely a mindset of such.

I'm still pretty sure most players simply don't know about Profile.

Ideally the default PVP option would be "None" instead of Closed so we could tell the difference between genuine Closed people and those who just didn't bother. I also think people who haven't touched their profile should get prompted every so many in-game hours.

This. I believe Solomon has mentioned it but its probably a low priority.

Profile is an optional tool for use to enhance or customize your gaming experience, just like demeanor and avoids. It shouldn't be mandatory, though I think 'None' sounds like a good idea.

Adding periodic prompts would not make it mandatory. You could certainly choose to ignore them. They could even be made to only show up when you login, like when NEWS is updated.

The point here is to reach the people who aren't aware of the Profile system or how it works, not to pester people who choose not to use it.

Sometimes I wonder if it's the difference between ignorance and apathy. I know about profile, therefore I'm not ignorant of it, but I simply don't care and therefore I'm apathetic. Profile is completely meaningless to me.

Agree with the spirit of the suggestion, but the prompts would be mandatory even if setting them isn't. They could be squelched, but still...

I understand your point. However, I'd like to point out...

I doubt adding a reminder to the info received at logon is going to bother anyone. Most of us have been ignoring the above for almost a decade.

It could also be similar to the PIN spam. 1-2 days then gone.

The last thing we need is even more spam when we first log onto the game. Putting profile reminders in there would just lead to more stuff being put in. I'm in the group of people who know of profiles, but don't care enough to actually mess with it. I'd rather not have something pop up at me every time I log on. If anything just have a profile alert pop up when you first create a new character so people are at least made aware of their existance.

I don't see someones Open or Closed stance, having anything to do with their role-playing!

People should only be allowed to set their PvP stance one step away from their RP stance.

i.e. no more heavy-closed people.

Going to have to just agree to disagree on this one. I agree educating people with game features like PROFILE is a good idea; I think it would just be another thing they ignored if a message popped up reminding them to set profile, avoids, and demeanor every time they logged in.

That's because you're not new. You need to put yourselves in their shoes... I read EVERYTHING when I was new. Just a thought.

Most of the player base is ignorant of PROFILE because they are new?

It really depends on how the display is featured. If they make it so you are required to put in your profile settings to some degree before continuing, then that's pretty straightforward. Depends on how important it is for it to be known and utilized.

A nudge on log-in to set your profile will not hurt anything.

Because they don't read the boards, I imagine.

You're right. They probably aren't all new. I was basing my argument off your idea that people ignore spam etc.

People won't ignore something "new" that pops up. In fact, you might be able to argue that people tune the words out because its the same thing every day. Add a new message and I bet they might read it.

There's so many of these, that maybe a reminder for all of them would be useful.

Don't forget the friend list, that goes along with demeanor.

From this discussion, it seems like it would be neat to have some kind of UI element that could tell you something neat you can do, like PROFILE, or a verb you might not know about, or something like that.

I like this idea. Also support profile defaulting to unset for RP/PvP (with unset being unchooseable after you change it) and RP settings being capped at one level higher than the PvP setting.

I like how this would cause me to lie to other players about what level of OOC conversation I find acceptable.
Awesome suggestion.

Ya. No thanks. I dislike the whole profile system anyway, and fail to see why everyone gets up in arms about it on a regular basis. I wish there were a way to turn it off completely.
