Hi guys.

I've been playing D&D with some friends recently and it has got me thinking about Dragon Realms again. I haven't played in years and I'm not sure which character is which on my old account so I'm going with at least Premium for the extra slots. Very tempted to go for Platinum if it still has an active player base. Does it still have regular events that don't have crazy high skill requirements? Generally, can anyone say if it's still worth it?

Thanks,
Rick (Rayit)

tl;dr If you want a very focused PvE or PvP experience, look elsewhere. If you want a social/rp experience, it's hard to beat DR short of running your own tabletop game.

Depends on what you're looking for. If what you're after is grinding PvE to get rich/skilled/good and/or the casino aspect of grinding down mobs in hopes of that fat loot drop, you're probably better off with something more purely focused on that. I will cede here that DRs skill grinding experience is probably among the deeper experiences out there, and it's certainly one of the ones that takes the longest (hard to find a game that takes longer to reach max skill), but there are plenty of other games out there that offer more engagement out of their grinding/casino experience than DR does.

If you're after a solid and engaging PvP experience, again, you're probably better off with something more specialized on it.

DR has both of those things and does them well enough, but that's not where DR really shines, imo. What I mean is that DR does do some things better than most other games, just not those things. For instance, it's about as close to a tabletop RPG that I've found without actually being a tabletop RPG. If you want to get into character and mess around with your friends, DR is currently one of the best titles on the market.

This is in part due to a roleplay-centric design focus on the part of the developers. DR has more cool RP verbs, lore, regions to explore, etc etc than it ever had in the past. Furthermore, the GM team does still host wonderful live events, many/most of which are free and public. This is probably where DR shines the most, imo. Not many other games still do this kind of thing, at least not the way DR does. It's like having dungeonmasters/storytellers in an MMO. I can hardly give enough praise to the live events team.

Furthermore, a large chunk of the player base will also throw their own events and/or stir up the pot themselves. This comes in a few forms, from impromptu brawls and random pick-pockets to player-controlled necromancers tormenting folks with zombies. But mostly what you'll see are the organized player-run events, like the ones that the various Orders throw all the time, or PvP tournaments. Thieves may not be anywhere near as much of a source of player-driven content (die, pick-pocket!) as they used to be, since the economy is largely bjorked and no one gives a crap about a few platinum kronars anymore, but Necromancers have made a valiant effort to rise up (har har har) and fill that gap. The loss of The Starry Road has taken some of the cool RP angles and emotional impact out of player-driven conflicts, but things are still okay in that area if you find good, compatible friends to do such things with.

Overall, players interacting with other players to tell dynamic and emergent stories is still a thing that happens. Sure, you run into a lot of folks who are just quietly scripting away at the Empath/Ranger guilds with their profiles set to RP Light/None or whatever, but plenty of us are also out and about mixing stuff up, too.

All in all it's still a very good time to play DR if you're looking for the right things.
