Is there a way to use our own image for an avatar rather than the choices provided?

Sort of.

Option 1: Submit one or more images for Simutronics approval. If it or they pass, they will be added to the avatar icons available. But it/they will be available for anyone to use.

Option 2: At one point, a few people won the right to use a custom image for their avatar, one that would be designed exclusively for them. These avatars are not generally available, but are only rarely offered by Simutronics.

IIRC, option 2 was one of the door prizes available at SimuCon two years ago, and I don't recall any additional personal avatars ever being offered.

I submitted a whole slew of new avatars last June and resubmitted them in July when I never heard anything back. Just about every one of them was Simutronics art (critters, web graphics, and NPC portraits) 'cause I figured they wouldn't decline those, but none of them ever got posted except the atik'et. I've pretty much given up on them now. :(

Here are all the ones I've submitted, along with a few more I added in February but never sent in: http://www.lurksponge.com/avatars

Some of the places ones are up, and some of the others are up too, unless you submitted those earlier.

Yeah, all those not marked as "new" had already been submitted and approved. It's the 45 or so "new" avatars I made a few months later that never got any sort of response.

Bah they did too get a response. The response was "When we get to them, we'll add them."

Sorry, I thought a year's wait pretty much meant "No." :(
