Weapons and armor in the low 70's, what's a good critter to hunt after Rock Trolls? Preferably skinnable on the main-land.

I hunted blood wolves after rock trolls as well. You can also find them to the west of Crossing as long as you don't go too far up the rocky outcrop into the ogres and bears. The hunting area in Theren is much larger, though.

I like to imagine that the popping sound of PD is kind of like the fire swamp.

The wolves in Theren are actually at least 20ish ranks harder than the wolves west of crossing. I never saw ogres when I was hunting there with my cleric, but there are 2 different tiers of bears in that area. Once you start to cap the wolves west of crossing, you can step up to the silver-backed bears fairly well. Once those start to slow down, you should be at a good point to transition to the blood wolves in Theren, or just about ready for cave trolls in Forf (this is where I went).
