but is doing nothing for my weapons

That means thugs have a higher offense than defense. A mob doesn't train all skills equally.

Appraise thug carefully and you'll see how suitable they are for training.

You can either continue to milk defenses there and farm for loot or pick up another weapon and train it until you cap out what they'll train defenses to. Alternatively (preferably) move up the hunting ladder into another hunting ground.

TC thugs are crazy powerful offense wise. Their crossbow OF is easily 200 ranks higher than it should be. Or at least it was last time I went there to get thug powders a while ago.
