What to hunt - Boxes 05/28/2014 06:58 AM CDT
Howdy,

I have almost reached evasion learning cap on my current critters (atik'et in the blasted plain) and need a new creature to hunt. I need something that drops boxes, but I've never hunted up the box ladder past about 120 ranks or so and with the changes to creature experience windows I'm a bit lost as to what would be a good option to hunt. Ideally I'm looking for something that drops boxes with at least a moderate frequency, and if the mob is skinnable, spawns with a skinnable mob, or even is nearby a skinnable mob in the same level range that would be preferable. I'm okay with popping boxes slightly above level, since I have boosters.

Well, with only 80 ranks in locks, I'd say go to swain or something else, and try to get it up to around the rest of your ranks.

You'll be hard pressed to pick around a 40-50 rank gap, won't you? Even with some gnarly boosters, that's a 1/3 or 1/2 total ranks gap.

I've been picking gargoyle since 40 ranks, and atik'et boxes since 60 ranks without issue. Most boxes are longshots, but it is more than doable.

I should rephrase my request. I am looking for a creature that will train my combat skills that happens to drop boxes too.

Swain or quartz gargs would still be my suggestion if you can. Maybe togballs, but they are undead.

Snow Goblins are skin-able and drop boxes. They would fit perfect for your combat ranks.

You rephrased your question which is why I'd recommend them (I can't vouch for the fact you will be able to pick their boxes).

I've tried Swain since posting, and they're okay but don't move evasion. They do have the benefit over the atik'et that I was hunting in that they drop boxes a lot more frequently. According to elanthipedia, I think quartz gargs are premium only? Going by their entry they probably would be perfect otherwise.

I totally forgot about snow goblins. I think you might be right. I'll head over there after work today and give them a try. I suspect I'll be able to open their boxes without too much trouble, since swain boxes are quite easy. I have a feeling my definition of 'without too much trouble' is probably a bit more generous than most judging by the responses so far.

Have you tried Sand Sprites? I know they're not skinnable, but they used to drop lots of boxes.

Update: Second tier snow goblins are perfect and train everything well including boxes. Thanks for all the advice.
