As far as I can tell they're teaching little to no weapons at their range.
I tried with a staff (49 ranks), crossbow (107 ranks, full aim too which I usually get a 6 point exp gain from) and LT (115) all of which I can hit them steadily with without a noticeable gain. I think my LT showed a 1/34 after a few minutes and pulsed out immediately.
They're teaching tiny amounts of targeted at 246 ranks and still teaching def's great in their range.
