How do I retrieve lodged weapons short of killing the beast?

The command is:
get (item) from (creature)
IE: get spear from goblin
You're going to get a bad reputation if you go around pinching every spectral reaper you see.

I've been having issues with it, even using the correct syntax. I just punch the thing to death.

if theres more than one of the same critter you have to number it out

I was using TAKE instead, which used to work. It gives no message, what-so-ever now. You also could specify a non-existent creature and it would work, which is no longer the case. Seconding the request for getting it out of the one you're facing.
