Parry vs Shield 09/08/2011 06:45 PM CDT
Anybody care to explain when using parry is better then using Shield? I've managed to keep both those skills nearly the same, but I remain unclear on when using parry would be to my advantage.

wearing a shield adds a little to stealth hinderance, so removing it and going with parry could be a choice for someone looking to enhance their stealth. That's the only one that I can think of though.

Parry remains the least affected by all the status affects and defensive penalties, such as MO, stuns, etc. Thus if you like heavy armor and/or are surrounded, parry is your go to.

That being said, I hate parry, since it's useless against roughly half the attacks out there.

Parry trains a little bit of weapons and learns at a secondary rate for many guilds that are armor tert.

I think the red-names stated that everything <all the defenses> will be important once we get to 3.0, so i'd just train everything. :-)

that said, my MM's have sucky parry and will really need to learn how to train it without killing themselves doing so. :-(

Parry has the smallest multi opponent penalty and receives a bonus if you parry with a weapon with which you have skill. Once you have significant (read: 300+) ranks in the weapon you're parrying with, it will be a superior (IMO) defense when you're engaged with the maximum number of melee critters. This highly specific answer is the only real use for it right now, I think. Hopefully that changes in combat 3.0.

Basically, worth having since learning it is pretty painless (just switch stances for a couple minutes), but currently don't expect it to be like shield.
