Chain vs leather 06/28/2011 08:12 AM CDT
I'm fairly new, and I've started off with leathers and chain pieces filling in the head, neck, and gloves.

Now I'm starting to consider swapping out for chain shirt and greaves, and leather filling in the gaps. I'm hoping that the better protection keeps me a bit healthier, since I find that every time I get hit while hunting I start to get hurt pretty quick in my leathers.

I understand that one of the downsides of using chain is stealth hindrance... but I'm currently not training any stealth. (Whether or not that's a terrible idea is another debate).

So - any other big downsides for a barbarian to be using light chain? Or should I go ahead and make the swap?

As of right now heavier armor will hinder your dancing as a barb, but that is going away with the guild rewrite. If you are just wanting more protection switch to full LC. If you are wanting to keep training 2 armors the setup you have now is the best way to go about it. Putting leather on your hands and head will result in more stuns which will cause you to get hurt/die more.

What kind of leathers are you using? Tanned leathers are expensive but worth it, and should protect you pretty well. If you can't afford tanned armor then try getting some Shard hunting leathers.

I'm currently using leathers from wolf clan. I'd be happy to buy tanned leathers (or even see if I can afford them) except I have no idea where to go to buy them.

Check the rangers guild, if you want to buy it from the source (can be more difficult), or go to the bazaar, and check out the market plaza, some trader's shop should be opened and have some available, or at least a trader available to ask about acquiring some.

Wolf Clan leathers are strong- for their class. But they are heavy and hindering. You would be better off going with tanned, or a full chain set-up.

I used leather on my barb to 300 ranks, then switched to LC and ran it to 500 ranks...after that I went with an augmented hauberk(forged) with leather gloves and cowl(tanned) both kept moving nicely and due to high evasion and stats, stuns were kept to a minimum. But its all about how you want to play. If you aren't worried about stealth...go with a full LC set up. If you want stealths, then mix in some leathers or go all leathers and heavy on the reflex and evasion.

Figure out what works best for how you want to play your char. There no "perfect" setup except what works best for you personally.

Sorry, but you're completely wrong.

The perfect setup the one that best lets me kill you. I mean find you, cause I wanna be your friend. Yea, friend.

Ooops. Sorry, didn't mean that to come out angry.

More "pointlessly Barbaric and silly" than angry. Damn internets and lack of emotion.
