Yes they did. Given the title, I think "this" falls under two systems:
1) The task verb (
http://elanthipedia.org/w/index.php/Task) where PCs can ask various NPCs about tasks. Upon completion, the PCs will give you coins)
or
2) The Assassins Game (
http://elanthipedia.org/w/index.php/Assassins_Game - though I guess it's not been updated in Elanthipedia). This is more of a bounty system where a player opts in (via the assassin verb I think). Upon joining, they receive the name of a player they must kill. If they do so, they receive some coins and a new kill. You name is also up for other assassins to kill you as well. So keep a look out. up
