Skinning knives question 11/27/2015 02:49 PM CST
Just to make sure I understand, I've read that anything with "skinning knife" in the description gets max bonus but a worn knife doesn't get as much of a bonus.

So what about a knife that has both? That gets max bonus?

Hand held skinning knives are superior to worn skinning knives. You trade convenience for effectiveness.

hand held 'skinning' knife>worn 'skinning' knife>all other knives

I've never seen anything that says that much. Any chance you got a link to a post or something?

Skaen is correct on this, I don't have a link to the red-name post but I do recall seeing it.

Yeah, the first link says stuff about "skinning" knives. However, there are worn "skinning kife" items. So, that brings up the question that even if it's worn; as long as it's a "skinning knife" does it still reach the max bonus available?

Last time we had a question about this, we had some testing demonstrate the superiority of a 'skinning knife' in hand over the same knife on the belt, and an oblique redname confirmation:

>>I hope that the apparent penalty of worn skinning knives is a bug.
>Not my system, but I can say that things are functioning as they were designed to do.

Someone recalled in that thread (and I have the same recollection) that this was announced when wearable 'skinning' knives were first released, but nobody could remember where that post might be then, and I haven't the foggiest where it might be now, either.

The thread on it contains posts 274 - 279 in this folder. Z's comment is in post 277.

The answer is no, but I'm not sure we're going to clarify this to your satisfaction due to the phrasing.

I think the way to look at it is if "skinning knife" means all skinning knives, including belt-worn, then it makes no sense to say that a belt-worn skinning knife has smaller bonus than all skinning knives, which includes the belt-worn variety.

The skinning knives that aren't belt-worn have no other descriptor, so there's nothing to call them except "skinning knives." For purposes of posting, it might have been clearer to call them non-belt worn as opposed to belt worn, but since there's nothing ingame that TAPs as a non-belt worn skinning knife, the GMs didn't bother apparently.

Is that the release post for wearable belt knives like the one in question, with 'skinning knife' in their name? https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Weapon:Darkstone-hilted_skinning_knife_with_a_blackened_blade

It looks like the release of the orignal belt knives. In any event, we know there are three kinds of skinning knives

1) Light-edged weapon with 'skinning knife' somewhere in their name. The game checks explicitly for the words 'skinning knife' when awarding the maximum bonus to skin attempts.

2) Belt knives, which now may or may not be weapons. They give a bonus, but not as good as a 'skinning knife' (but better than a generic light edged weapon, I think?). I don't think weather or not you can stab a person with one matters for the skinning bonus (of course it matters to necromancers).

3) Wearable knives with 'skinning knife' in the name, like the item in question. Through testing and a GM confirmation, we know that these give the 'skinning knife' bonus (or something close) when they are in your hand, but only give the bonus of a belt knife if you are wearing them.

Which is all clear as mud.

Three is better then two categorizing of these items, but one trumps the other two, besides when you forego wearing three and use it in your hand, which is the largest (but doesn't supersede) bonus the number one category.
