How does sorcery backlash work? 11/18/2018 10:26 AM CST

Do each spell have their own backlash modifier, or is it consistent across all spells of the same difficulty tier? For example: Intro, Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Esoteric would all be consistent for that difficulty, for that mana type.

Base difficulty of any given spell is going to be modified by your guild/mana type. See here: https://elanthipedia.play.net/Sorcery

Specifically, look at the table "Backlash Risk by Mana Type." For a Cleric, Clear Visions is going to be pretty safe at lower ranks but Compost will be very dangerous, because of the ease of lunar mana vs. life mana for a holy mana user.

I don't believe individual spells have difficulty modifiers.

That's the question. Different people have different opinions, and I'd love a GM to confirm or deny whether this is the case.

Pretty sure there are "hooks" that allow it, but that doesn't mean it's being used by any spells.

Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

Is that still accurate? That seems crazy in general, and especially crazy in the case of Glythtide's Gift. Plus it makes is really hard to give any meaningful feedback, as a player.

We were having this discussion on discord, and it looks like the answer is kind of?

"Backlash rates were standardized and generally get riskier for the really advanced spells. I'm not in a position right now to confirm which way AUS went."

This one's really recent. The code is still there for things to be "more dangerous" Grejuva says Trabe Chalice and Fluoresce are, but most use templates.
Literally every spell I've tested works the same. I haven't tested those two trader spells.

It seems that there was an attempt normalize spells in 2016, but some spells are still configured to be more dangerous than others.

Wouldn't hurt to have some kind of specialized message when a spell puts abnormal strain on a player.
