Getting ready to dig into a massive fishing experiment. 09/17/2007 07:30 PM CDT
Ok, well, I was looking over my skill ranks... and decided that I needed foraging and animal lore for my ranger.

I will start my experiment on Aesry as it's where I currently live.

I am gonna test the following assumptions (See below for testing methods)

BAIT TYPE:
+ I believe that differnet baits affect the bite rate.
+ I believe that different baits attract different types of fish.

CASTING DISTANCE:
+ I believe that the average weight of the fish will increase the farther out you cast.
+ I believe that the average number of bites will decrease the farther out you cast.

WAVE Vs. NO WAVE:
I believe that waving a pole will have no effect in my 10sec catch rate.

THINGS I AM CONSIDERING BUT NOT TESTING YET:
Time of Day and Weather as factors to Fishing
Line size and it's effect on bite rate, and fish size
Hook size and it's effect on bite rate, and fish size
Line and Hook size and losing fish (I have yet to lose on yet, but have not set a record yet either)
Foraging Ranks and size of fish (I will need some help on this)

TESTING METHODS:
I figure it would be best to test with written methods, so if others would like to help out they may. I use the Genie FE, but if somone needs help writing a testing script for ease of numbers, I would have no problem writing it in trade for information.

Bait Bite Ratio Testing:
BAIT POLE - CAST (Min Distance 25ft?) - PAUSE 10 SECONDS - REEL IN - REPEAT.
I am gonna base test it at 500 attempts per bait...

Bait Fish Type Ratio"
Same as above - just recording type of fish
Test will be combined with the above.

DISTANCE TESTS:
Given the most productive Bait above I will use it to test the distances.
25FT
50FT
75FT
100FT

Hopefully using a fish appropraite bait, I will be able to catch 50 fish of one type at each distance.
(I really hope distance doesn't affect type of fish)

Will also be able to compare bait bite ratio at each distance versus the test rate at 25FT.

WAVE VS. NO WAVE:
I think instead of just pausing for 10 seconds... I will pause 5 -- wave -- pause 5 and see if that changes anything.
My intial thought is that WAVE my reset the "CAST TRIGGER" of the pole in some way... but not sure (hence the testing)

IMPORTANT STATS:
Guild: Ranger
Foraging: 116 71.97%
Animal Lore: 47 79.29%
Mechanical Lore: 92 28.68%
Strength: 22
Agility: 27
Reflex: 24

Anyone wishing to help is more than welcome. And if there is absolutely no interest in this I will keep it to myself.

What size line/hooks are you using?

I might gather some data as well, and want to keep things consistent with your method.

I started doing some experiments awhile back on Aesry. I never completed this and frankly have no interest to now. Let me know if you want my data.

Smallest (I believe of everything)

It's a collapsible fishing pole with a roll of line at one end that you can cast out into the water.
You have some type 5 line.
You have a size 4 hook

And yes, I would love any data you have. You can AIM me at EDGEBRO21 or UBBAKILLER on YAHOO! messenger

Not the smallest. Free stuff is type 2 and 3, and I think there's maybe a 1 floating around somewhere. Going the other way, it goes up all the way to like size 100 or something ridiculous like that but I dunno if that's increasing or decreasing in size.

Pole size probably doesn't matter, but it looks like it at least varies from short to long.

I believe the line and hook vary depending on where you buy your pole. I know that I bought one in Aesry, and the other in Ilaya Tapia and they were rigged different.

Lower numbers are smaller, higher numbers bigger.

There is indeed size 1 in Iliya Taipa or however it's spelled.

Well... looks like I am startting in the lower end range then... not the bottom.

Are there size 1 hooks? and line?

One or both are in Ilaya Taipa.

Somethings I have noticed:

Your hook size will affect the size of fish you can get stuck on your line.
Your line size will affect the likelihood of the larger fish being able to break the line.
There is some point, based on stats I think, where you can catch a fish that is large/strong enough to either break your line, or break or pull your pole out of your hands if the line is heavy enough.
The weight of fish you can catch of any type is, allegedly, based on your foaging skill ranks.

I have less than 100 ranks of Foraging, and, on Ratha especially, tend to lose poles.

Note that there is a web-site available that lists fish in "sets" that are available from different locations.

Earlier in this folder, if I remember correctly, there was a discussion about some of the "best" ways to fish. And some warnings about some things to avoid while fishing, like moving rooms with your line out.

Some other things I have noted:
When you cast from a specific location, your base cast appears to always be the same distance. I usually notice that because at location X it only takes 4 pulls to bring in my hook, while at another location it can be 10 pulls.

Largest hook: 60
Largest line: 9
Both from the bait shop on Ratha, note that they should include "that I have run across."

Moving around is ok, so long as you don't try messing with your pole at all until you get back to the exact room you cast from.

I had a fish break my line just the other day on the trip out to Ratha. This was using the stock line on the boat.
